H.A.A.R.P. stands for the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program, and is not a secret or classified project. On their website it plainly states that the site is “a premier facility for the study of ionospheric physics and radio science,” but many people believe it has another purpose not so benign. Many people believe HAARP is a potential global weapon that can control the weather.

The finished design.

Trying to control the weather isn’t all that crazy of an idea. Weather Modification Inc. has been around for 40 years. Other countries have spent tons of money in weather manipulation throughout the years. HAARP is a big clump of radio antennas in Alaska that can be linked together to focus there combined energy into a target in the ionosphere. There are about 180 individual antennas, with a total size about 35 acres and combined they can spit out about 3,600 kilowatts of energy into the atmosphere. That’s 3.6 million watts. A radio station is 50 thousand watts max. The people running HAARP say it’s not a weather control project or any type of “star wars” weapon. What they don’t say is exactly what will happen when they shoot the energy into our atmosphere. Since its a research project, they figure just turn it on and see what happens, so it’s not that hard to see why a lot of people are concerned about this.

I was given a book a long time ago on concept art for old Disney films and one of the films they had sketches for was called Victory Through Air Power. One of the sketches was of the earth with a black octopus curling around the earth from above and the same coming up from below. I always thought this was a striking image and it was one of the first things that came to my mind when I was thinking about HAARP as a potential global weapon.

<img src="http://www.paranormalapparel.com/journal/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/haarpsketch1.jpg" alt="This was my initial sketch, inspired by an old concept sketch for the disney film Victory Through Air Power.” title=”haarpsketch1″ width=”355″ height=”382″ class=”size-full wp-image-282″ />
This was my initial sketch, inspired by an old concept sketch for the disney film Victory Through Air Power.

I chose oranges and browns for the palette because orange is traditionally a color signifying caution, like in road construction, and putting the earth in browns give it a more gloomy feel. I put the octopus over the northern hemisphere, but I didn’t put it over Alaska just because I didn’t think the view of the earth from that perspective was as interesting. I used google earth to position the earth underneath the octopus.

I don’t really know what to say about this one now, since I spent all this time recreating the Fibonacci spiral in illustrator, and dividing up the values so I had the perfect 10 equal steps from black to white, then I saw the link on wikipedia for the golden spiral and somebody already used the exact same thing to illustrate the sections. Well almost. They have 9 sections and I have 10. So it obviously isn’t that original of an idea. It looks cool though.

This was the first attempt to figure out how to build it.

In a Fibonnaci number sequence, which goes back hundreds of years, each number is equal to the last two numbers. So it goes 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, and so on for as long as you want to keep adding numbers. The sequence is found all over in nature, so its really more of a discovery than an invention.

One square and curve unit

Creating the graphic wasn’t all that hard, its really a series of squares, with a smooth arc from one corner to the other. You can keep growing it out as large as you want, but I thought 10 would be good for percentages of black. The centermost square is 100 percent white, then I add 10 percent black to the value until you get to 90 percent at the largest square. It never gets to 100 percent black unless the design is on a black shirt.

The end result

Really the best way to build the graphic is to make one square with its corresponding curve, then group those, then duplicate them and scale them as big as you like.

When I say “The Chip” I’m referring to an RFID chip (radio-frequency identification) that many people want implanted in hands of humans for security purposes. This tiny grain of rice sized implant would get surgically implanted into your hand or somewhere and it would contain data about your identification, social security number and such. Anybody with a reader can then point it at you and receive the information on the chip and put that information into a database. At first this might seem convenient. If you were employed at a company, the company could install readers in the building and check when you entered and exited the building, how long you were at your desk, how many times you went to the bathroom, etc. The benefits and drawbacks of a technology like this implemented into humans is pretty obvious, and most technological advancements have their plusses and minuses, but the basic problem I have with insane security measures like this is that once you give them the power, its almost impossible to get it back. And if you think that it’s not going to happen, it’s already happening. We’re in the middle of it now.

A lot of people are against “the chip” though, and that may not be the only way big brother tracks you. RFID chips are also in millions of products including clothing. You probably have many RFID chips in your house without knowing it. They also have a special ink that can be colorless, but read by RFID readers and tracked that way. If I was going to make a shirt about RFID tracking, I like the little bean chip for a graphic better than the others, at least to start with.

So I used my own hand again, and just stuck it on the flatbed scanner.

A scan of my hand.

Then after a simple desaturate, invert, and find edges, you can see we are well on our way…

The same and, after some Photoshop button pushery.

Then its just a matter of touch up. If I wanted to only print on black shirts I’d be all set, but I wanted to print on other dark colored shirts, then a little more is needed. If you copy the touched up black and white file into a channel, then create a new blank layer, load the new channel as a selection then fill with white, you’ll have the white outlines of the hand with a transparent background. Was that too fast?

1. Copy black and white layer to a new blank channel (make sure the white in the layer is what you want to keep). That’s as simple as select all, copy, paste.
2. Create a new blank layer.
3. Load the new channel as a selection. That’s usually under the “Select” menu at the top, then click “Load Selection” and select the channel you want. That will give you some ant trails around the white parts of the channel you just filled in.
4. Then fill the ant trails with white or whatever color you want.
5. Save as a png with alpha

The finished design.

Again, like moon phases, a big magnet isn’t exactly paranormal, its more a subject that comes up a lot in ufology and paranormal topics and I just wanted a shirt with a big magnet on it.

So Illustrator has a filter called “Extrude & Bevel” and thats what I used to create the basic 3d shape of the magnet. I started with a simple magnet shape in Illustrator, created by modifying a couple of circles…

The basic magnet shape.

The plus and minus sign are made from scratch too, just three lines with a rounded stroke on them, then outline stroke and use pathfinder to merge together. So thats the flat image, colored appropriately and then when the extrude and bevel filter is applied we get this image…

The outline version of the pseudo 3d image.

After thats all finished, I just saved it as a png with an alpha channel and its all ready to go.

The finished design.

So what the heck is that supposed to mean? Am I a jerk or what?

Possibly. I think I’m pretty fair towards science in general. I’m fascinated by the subject, and I appreciate all the advancements we’ve made so far, but there is quite a lot that is left ignored for a variety of reasons. There have been a lot of discoveries that were originally laughed at and ridiculed, only to find out later that it was the real deal. I don’t want to go into a lot of detail because it’s primarily negative. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, then just disregard this post altogether.

Love Science/Hate Science part 1

As for the creation of the designs themselves, I dont have a lot of shirts with slogans on them, but I’m willing to make exceptions on certain occasions. I couldn’t think of any clever way of representing it with a graphic yet, so I just flat out said it. I realize it might not be my best work. I didn’t sketch out anything in advance this time, it was just straight illustrator work from beginning to end. I did convert the text to outlines and mess with everything a bit, it wasn’t like a straight font to shirt type of deal.

Love Science/Hate Science part 2

To rough up text easily in illustrator, what I do is convert to outlines, then scale way up, way larger than you need to, then use the roughen filter at a low value, then scale back down. The slash could be done with a simple shape and removed from the text with the pathfinder tool.

There are several designs that I have in various stages of production that don’t really have any sort of grand or secret meaning. I include them because I like the design and the subject matter is related and comes up often in paranormal topics. The moon is definitely one of them. Whether it’s ancient astronauts or secret military programs or alien bases mining helium 3, the moon comes up a lot in conversations about the unknown.

The final moon phase graphic.

So I wanted a moon shirt, but how to do it? I thought about the moon itself as a graphical element, and a big white circle wouldn’t do. In order for the moon to be recognizable as the moon, it need to have the craters, and dark splotches that we see from earth and in photos. Well as you can see here, there is way more texture information than could be included on a shirt, and I wouldn’t want to just print a photo of the moon anyway. The splotches and craters would have to be simplified and outlined in a computer program and I just didn’t feel like doing all that work for a really obvious moon graphic anyway. The other thing about the moon that you could use are its phases. I thought all the phases of the moon lined up like simple white slices would make a pleasing graphic I thought. So I just grabbed some moon phase graphics from NASA or somewhere and outlined the shapes. I saved the file as an EPS and that makes my first flex print design.
